Toe River Artists

Professional Creativity

Follow any road in the Toe River area of Burnsville and Yancey County and you’re likely to arrive at the studio of an artist.  Across this relatively small region are hundreds of individual artists and crafters working in their studios making unique, original objects in clay, glass, wood, metal and fiber as well as furniture and musical instruments.

Pete McWhirter owns and operates McWhirter Studio with his wife Kim in the South Toe Valley.  To see his finished piece, scroll down to the bottom.

Toe River Arts Council

TRAC, the Toe River Arts Council, maintains galleries in Burnsville and nearby Spruce Pine, and stages two studio tours each year to give people a chance to meet and talk with artists.  The first tour is held in the summer, the second in early December.  TRAC has been involved in promoting the arts in Yancey and Mitchell Counties since 1976.  Today the organization works to facilitate arts eduction projects,  stages the Music In The Mountains Folk Festival, and supports local artists through grants, scholarships, and workshops.
