Each August, Burnsville hosts the Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair, a summer celebration of crafts, art, music and food held on Burnsville Town Square. With more than 200 vendors, and live music on stage throughout the event, the Crafts Fair is always a popular destination in the mountains. Most people stroll through the vendors’ booths and then settle into lawn chairs under the shade trees to watch the bands on stage.
The stairs beside the Visitor Center lead up the hill to the 1840 McElroy House at the Yancey History Association Complex, which includes the Rush Wray Museum, an 1860s village setting with 3 log structures, and the Dr. Lloyd Bailey Annex museum and genealogical research center.
